Functional Finishes for Polyester Knits
Antibacterial, UV-protective, water-repellent and antistatic finishes on polyester knits: their functions, mechanisms and durability.
A finish is the treatment that changes the function and hand of greige knit fabric. On polyester knits, functional finishes add end-use-specific performance to the base fabric: preventing odor, protecting from the sun, keeping water away or reducing static. These finishes can be applied alone or in combination; the common requirement is adequate durability over the garment's life and through washing.
Antibacterial / odor control
Because polyester holds sweat on its surface, a build-up of perspiration and bacteria can generate odor. Antibacterial finishes suppress bacterial growth on the fabric and reduce odor formation. They are preferred in skin-close products such as sportswear, underwear and socks. It is important to use certified chemistry (for example OEKO-TEX) so that efficacy is retained after washing and skin safety is assured.
UV protection (sun protection factor)
By its nature polyester already blocks part of the ultraviolet light; a tight knit, higher weight and dark/optical colors increase this effect. UV finishes and dedicated absorbers lower the amount of UV the fabric transmits, raising the protection factor (UPF). It is an important selling point in beach, outdoor and children's wear; the protection level is measured by standard test methods.
Water-repellent
A water-repellent finish lowers the surface tension of the fabric face so that a water droplet beads and rolls off instead of being absorbed. It is not waterproof; the fabric keeps its air permeability while resisting light rain and splash. Compared with traditional fluorocarbon chemistry, fluorine-free (PFC/PFAS-free) repellent systems are increasingly preferred because of environmental concerns.
Antistatic finish
Because synthetic fibers such as polyester keep little moisture, they readily build up static electricity, especially in dry environments; this makes the fabric cling to the body and causes sparking. Antistatic finishes increase the conductivity of the fiber surface, reducing charge build-up and relieving these nuisances.
What to watch for when choosing a finish
- Wash durability: how many washes the finish retains its effect should be judged against the end use.
- Co-application: some finishes such as wicking and water repellency can conflict; a compatible combination is needed.
- The effect on hand and breathability should be checked.
- Chemical safety and certification (such as OEKO-TEX) matter for skin-contact products.
- Environmental profile: fluorine-free and sustainable chemistry choices are gaining importance.
Choosing the right functional finish starts with clearly defining the fabric's intended end use. When performance, durability, hand and compatibility are weighed together, a single base polyester knit can be transformed into very different performance products.
