The Weight Map: Which Knit Goes Where, from 80 to 400 g/m²

A practical map placing the dominant weight bands of ten polyester knit families on one axis, showing which band matches which product.

Weight (g/m²) is a knit's mass per square metre and the fastest indicator of which product it suits. Fersan's ten families line up on a single 80–400 g/m² axis; the map below summarises which band matches which product.

The same weight is not always the same hand

Weight alone does not tell all: single bed (single jersey) and double bed (interlock) feel very different at the same 200 g/m²; yarn fineness (denier), knit density and finishing also decide. So read the values as 'typical ranges', not exact recipes.

Selection tips

  • For light and cool, start at the low band (mesh, light single jersey).
  • For coverage and durability, move to the mid-upper band (interlock, French terry).
  • For warmth and upright stance, the top band (three-thread, ponte, polar).
  • Exact weight, composition and width are set to order — confirm with a sample.

Frequently asked questions

Which weight goes to which product?

Roughly: mesh and light jersey 80–150 g/m² (summer, lining); tees and innerwear 120–200; polo/piqué and rib 165–300; sweatshirt/hoodie two- and three-thread 250–400 g/m². The exact band depends on the fabric family.

Does the same weight always give the same hand?

No. At the same GSM, structure, yarn and finish change the hand; for example a 200 g/m² interlock and a piqué of the same weight differ in stiffness, opacity and stretch.
